National World Cup HIV Campaign

"11th June - 11th July 2010. LVCT's contribution."
"Problem: Evidence shows that knowledge of HIV status among men in Kenya has remained low (28%) compared to women (42%) (KAIS 2007). Of 352,413 people tested by LVCT between January and December 2009 44% were male and 56% female."
"Opportunity: The FIFA world cup coming to Africa for the first time brought men together in large numbers providing a unique opportunity for HIV prevention messaging and service uptake among men."
"Process: The National World Cup HTC Rapid Results Initiative (World Cup RRI) was an initiative of the National AIDS and STI Control Program (NASCOP) in collaboration with LVCT, PSI, Altimate Management and other stakeholders. It aimed at utilizing the opportunity created with men as the primary target. LVCT drawing from our experience, expertise and resources participated in the RRI in the following ways:
Providing technical support to the GOK: Conceptualization of the idea of exploiting the world cup opportunity to increase service uptake among men in collaboration with PSI and Altimate. Secretariat to the HTC technical working group. LVCT Facilitated provincial led stakeholder sensitization and planning for the RRI in Nyanza and Eastern provinces. Provided TA for data and M&E in formulation of reporting data tools and indicators.
Quality management: Dry blood spots (DBS) - a total of 145 samples were collected and submitted to National HIV Reference Lab (NHRL) from all LVCT supported sites in Nairobi, Nyanza and Eastern provinces. Proficiency testing (PT) - twenty four LVCT supported sites in Nairobi Nyanza and Eastern provinces received proficiency test samples; reconstituted the same and submitted the results to NHRL. Administration of client feedback interviews at facility level - 1,460 clients were interviewed. In-session observed practice - The supervisors were able to observe 48 service providers in all LVCT supported sites. Support supervision - 134 HTC service providers in the 11 districts were provided with supervision sessions in form of (One to one and group) debriefing sessions.
Direct service delivery: Direct service delivery targeted general population and MARPS. During the campaign LVCT set up additional service delivery points (hotspots) at local pubs, big screen entertainment spots, video dens in Nyanza, Eastern and Nairobi provinces.
Linkage to care to care and treatment: Referral uptake was strengthened by use of Community Health Workers for follow-up of clients. All clients who tested HIV positive were reffered for care and treatment services.
"Outputs: LVCT provided HIV testing and counselling services to a total of 46,471 people. Most At Risk Populations (MARPS) were also targeted during the RRI. 43% of those tested were first time testers.
QM outcomes: Client exit interview were conducted to establish client satisfaction, one of aspects of QM."
"Way forward: Targeted accelerated campaigns are key to achievement of universal access. Stregthened referral uptake during RRIs through implementation of the community strategy. Networking and creation of inter linkages with private sector. Create opportunities for partner testing."
"Highlight: Eastern South was acknowledged by NASCOP as the best performer in the World Cup RRI. LVCT is proud to be supporting Eastern South."
"Jitambue Leo! Ingia kwa network."
