Injecting drug use

"This poster attempts to alert our community to the increasing problem of injecting drug use and the dangers hidden in sharing needles and syringes. A variety of spears are shown. Spears served a valuable function within the community, defending people and providing food. But when misused, they can kill. Like spears, syringes can protect our life, or they can threaten it. Through immunisation and insulin injection, syringes can provide 'food' for a healthy community. But if they are used to inject other drugs such as heroin, speed, or pills, they can destroy the health of the individual and the community. And regardless of what is being injected (whether it is heroin or insulin) if we share syringes with other people, we could transmit diseases like Hepatitis, HIV/AIDS or Syphilis. The border pattern around the picture represent the stars of the Milky Way/ The stars are important sign posts that once helped our people navigate long journeys. They also tell stories from the Dreaming, teaching us about the values and laws which guide us to create a healthy and happy community. Listen, Learn and Act. The mother symbolises the role of all adults as carers, protectors and teachers of our children. Our children have a right to a future that is happy and healthy. The Hand Stencils found in Aboriginal 'Rock Art' may be seen as the signature of the artist. In this painting, hand stencils represent the signature of all Indigenous people with a message to 'STOP' the 'Invasion' of injecting drug use, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis into our community. The signatures of those first artists have survived thousands of years. Will the signatures of our children be so easily found a thousand years from now?"
