Day Without Art

"Day Without Art is an international day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS crisis. This fifth annual observance on December 1, 1993, once again coincides with World AIDS Day."

"More than 5,000 cultural institutions and AIDS service organizations participated last year. Their observances ranged from panel discussions and performance programs to the shrouding of artwork and the dimming of lights, and from the distribution of condoms and safer sax information to celebrations of the lives and achievements of colleagues and friends. The lamentable lack of widespread education about HIT infection and the needs of people with AIDS warrants every American's attention and efforts. Through their work, artists can play a vital role in such consciousness raising."

"Day Without Art is a project of Visual AIDS, a diverse group of artworkers concerned about AIDS. We are also the creators of The Ribbon Project, the red ribbon that has emerged as an international symbol of compassion for people living with AIDS; and Night Without Light, a symbolic 15-miunute blackout of city skylines from New York to San Francisco."
